Headaches due to Tension
Tension is probably responsible for around three quarters of all headaches, including some migraines. Tension headaches affect women more than men. Anxiety can cause this kind of headache by contributing to other triggers, such as lack of sleep and overuse of caffeine. Sufferers are likely to experience mild or moderate pain on both sides of the head and a sensation of pressure behind the eyes, together with a feeling of tightness in the neck muscles.
Treatments for Headache due to Tension
Winding down helps, but this can be easier said than done. ‘It's a matter of what you find relaxing,' says Ann Turner, Director of the Migraine Association. ‘We suggest that people take regular exercise but you could also try yoga, meditation, a bath with aromatherapy candles – whatever suits you.' Massaging the head and neck can also help when in the throes of a tension headache.
Tension headaches are due to tight, contracted muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp, and jaw. They are often related to stress, depression, or anxiety. Overworking, not getting enough sleep, missing meals, and using alcohol or street drugs can make you more susceptible to them. Headaches can be triggered by chocolate, cheese, and monosodium glutamate (MSG). People who drink caffeine can have headaches when they don't get their usual daily amount.
