Poor Posture
‘Headaches are often related to muscular problems in the neck and shoulders among older people,' says Dr McGregor. Poor posture, for instance when sitting in front of the computer or driving, can be to blame.
Treatments: Improve your posture and arrange your chair and desk so that you are sitting properly. You may also be able to alter your driving position by adjusting the seat and/or the steering wheel.
Medication - Side effects of medication, particularly some of those used to treat heart disease and high blood pressure, can also be a cause of headaches, says Dr McGregor.
Treatments: See your GP if you suspect this is the case.
Sinuses
Sinuses are spaces behind the cheekbones which are normally clear. When they become blocked they can cause a dull, aching head pain, which gets worse if you bend over. Pains in the cheeks and jaw are also common.
Treatment: It is worth trying a decongestant for a few days, but if this doesn't help, you should see your doctor as you might need antibiotics to combat an infection.
