Food and Drink
One in 10 people suffers from migraine, in which one-sided headaches are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. The symptoms can be triggered by certain foods in some people, and eating and drinking habits can play a role in tension headaches too.
Treatments: The classic ‘trigger' foods for migraine are said to be red wine, cheese and chocolate, which contain the chemical tyramine. Alcohol, caffeine and food additives can also cause set off an attack for some people. However, Ann Turner points out that not everyone is affected in the same way.
‘People who give up different foods may not actually find their headaches get better,' she warns. The best course of action is to keep a food diary to see if your headaches are linked to your eating habits.
Other possible headache culprits are dehydration, which causes the blood vessels to contract or missing a meal, which may trigger a migraine because it causes blood sugar levels to fall.
